WhiteHat Sentinel Appliance – Deployment Overview
A Secure Setup for QA Environments
The WhiteHat Sentinel Satellite Appliance is a customer-hosted, 1U rack-mountable router that provides an encrypted connection between a customer’s designated internal servers and the WhiteHat Operations Center.
Once installed on the customer’s network (WhiteHat recommends in a demilitarized zone, or DMZ), the Sentinel Satellite Appliance extends the vulnerability assessment capabilities of the Sentinel Service to an unlimited number of development, QA, staging, and intranet Web applications.
Through the Sentinel Satellite Appliance, vulnerability assessments are performed on the internal Web applications using the same rigorous and iterative methodology of scanning, verification and custom testing that WhiteHat Sentinel uses for your public-facing Web applications. For convenience, results of internal and external evaluations are displayed together in the Sentinel interface.
Preconfigured for Easy Installation
The setup of the Sentinel Satellite Appliance on an internal network is accomplished with either (a) a statically configured IP address, or (b) a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) that automatically assigns virtual IP addresses to designated internal hosts.
Upon bootup, the Sentinel Satellite Appliance uses an encrypted connection to request necessary information from its assigned WhiteHat Satellite controller. The Satellite Appliance then permits the delivery of the Sentinel Service on customer-designated internal Web applications.
With the Satellite Appliance, the need for administrators to open inbound ports in a firewall to connect to the WhiteHat Operations Center is eliminated.
Recommended Deployment
For optimum security and protection, WhiteHat recommends installing the Sentinel Satellite Appliance in the network DMZ (as noted above).
This configuration restricts inbound traffic from the WhiteHat Operations Center to the internal host machines designated for the Sentinel Service.
